JUNE 2010

June 1, 2010

We are home from Devon and it was wonderful.  Bob and Cassallo were so good.  Bob put a lot of pressure on himself. Cassallo was his only horse at Devon AND he only had the Green Conformation division. So - he had one shot at it and that puts a lot of pressure on a rider.  I was proud of him, and thought he rode really well.  There were a couple of places where he "maybe" could have cantered up instead of shortening, but it's easy to ride that course from the grandstands - isn't it?  We were able to watch all the First Year, Second Year, Regular Working, Regular Conformation and Green Conformation classes and I promise you that Cassallo was one of the best jumpers on the show grounds.  Today we were having lunch with Bob and D.J. and so many people (mainly other riders) came over and told Bob what a great jumper Cassallo is.  I know Bob is VERY PROUD of that baby horse who has learned soooooo much.  He's done a great job with him. I truly believe if he had done the First Year Green division that he would have been fabulous in the Green Conformation.  Monday they had one class, two classes today and one tomorrow.  I think Bob may have ridden a "little" and I mean just "a little" cautiously and I can't say I blame him under the circumstances.  He has done an AMAZING job with that wonderful horse. Um, um, um - I just love him !!!

So - all of you in the "Cassallo Fan Club" would have been very, very proud of him.  I'm trying to talk Caroline into buying him and putting her show clothes back on.  Oh my goodness, my Carolina on my favorite horse would be AMAZING !!!

One more class tomorrow.  I sure hope they have a good time !  I wish I could be there to see it.

Kelley Farmer was her wonderful riding self.  She and "Taken" were incredible - especially in the First Year Green Handy Hunter.  It was perfect - I'm not sure why it didn't score a 100 !!!   But, we were sitting on the other side of the ring from the judges so there was some reason they only gave it a 96 !!!  From where we were it was a 100 !!!  Kelley also rode "Listen" beautifully.  I'm telling you what - that girl can ride. Every time she walks in the ring it is to win and she gives it all she's got.  She goes for it !!!   Ryann got a cute picture of "Taken" when they jogged in.  He grabbed the crop in his mouth and wouldn't let it go.  Poor Kelley has to practically drag him into the ring for his ribbons.   Kelley said she usually has to take a carrot just to get him to walk up to accept his ribbon.  Hilarious !!!

Ken Berkley and Premiere were fabulous in the Green Conformation Handy Hunter.  Absolutely beautiful.  Ken told me that Premiere is an amazing horse - that he's very easy to ride.  He said that just last week he was Champion with Gina (his owner) in the Adults at another horse show.  Yep - he's easy to ride - because Ken has trained him to be easy to ride.  Like I said, Ken and Scott are incredible and their horses are incredible.

Ryann got some good pictures at Devon and will be posting them to a Facebook page called Ryann Winn Photography.

Remember to enter our June 5 show by noon tomorrow. Just email me your horses name, owner, rider, classes.  Byrd Rareshied is the judge.   Click HERE for the prize list.   Click HERE for the entry blank.  Please print it, fill it out, and bring it to the show to save time.  Pre-Entries are required so be sure to enter ahead of time.  Thank you.

God bless,

Nardeen

Thoughts into joy

Your thoughts are what frighten you. Choose to change them, and the fear is gone.

Your thoughts are what cause you to be frustrated, angry, disappointed, impatient and uncomfortable. And your thoughts can also take you far away from all those things.

For your thoughts can transform anger into forgiveness, disappointment into determination, discomfort into inspiration, and fear into love. The choice is always yours.

The world is what it is. Yet your thoughts determine how you situate yourself into the world.

By controlling your thoughts you control the kind of world in which you live. At the times when you realize it, and at the times when you don't, you are always controlling your thoughts.

Deep inside you is a beautiful, unique person who seeks true joy and fulfillment. Let your thoughts resonate with the genuine person you are, and that joy does surely come.

CHARLIE UPDATE

Charlie is hanging in there.  He is still in ICU on a ventilator.  He is very weak and sometimes disoriented.  Scott says it is so sad.  I feel so bad for all of them - Charlie, Brian and Jenny.  Their lives have changed drastically - and poor Brian and Jenny watching Charlie suffer.  It is just so sad.  Lots of prayers for everyone to have peace and grace.

ALICE UPDATE

The medicine is working - a little.  We don't see any BIG improvement in it, but the vets said it will take some time.  She is absolutely the best baby in the world.  She has to have four different eye medicines put in her eye.  Some are three times a day, some four times a day.  And she is so sweet about it.  Last night when we went into the barn to do it, Ryann called out "Alice" and she whinnyed to her.  Sooooo cute.  That baby loves Ryann and Brittany.

Looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow.  Be blessed !

June 5, 2010

Thank you everyone who came to our show and braved the heat.  We were blessed with a "little" breeze so that made it bearable.  And the air-conditioned lounge is always nice.

Ed Hipp announced our show and did a fabulous job.  Thank you Pinky for volunteering him. I sure hope he can be talked into doing a a few more. Ed has announced many "A" rated shows and is friends with Steve Sarafin, my favorite announcer in America.  Thank you Ed for spending the day with us.

It was so nice having the Stonehouse Stables group with us. We haven't shown with them for years. I love Tara, Mays and Cheryl and have sure missed seeing them.  Today felt like old times.  We are excited because we are going to their show next Saturday.  And Jenny (Old-Powell) is judging so it will really be like old home week.  We can't believe that we don't have any conflicts and we are all able to go.  God is good!

Ryann did a great job showing  the horses today.  Memo was a very good boy and was second in both Open over fences classes to Kasey on Bugotti and Wish List.  Kasey rode really well too and I love both of those horses.  We were really proud of Memo because he is a bit of a challenge.  He's a little afraid of jumping but he seems to be getting more and more relaxed.  And Ryann absolutely loves him.   Like I've said - he's her kind of ride.   We're hoping for Brittany to ride him some too, but for right now it's probably best not to confuse him.  We want to make him a "happy boy."  Thank you Lissa .  We're having a blast.

Sly and Toby were excellent.  Sly was Reserve Champion Baby Green - and guess to who ?   Deena - Kendall's baby horse.  It was her first time cantering a course at a show.  She was absolutely perfect.  What a sweet horse.   And Sydney finally got to show today.  We had Denise do her in the Baby Green because we just didn't think she had enough energy to do two divisions today - and we were right.  She jumped 17 jumps total, counting the one (yes one) schooling jump, and as soon as Denise put her back in her stall she laid down and took a nap.  A more laid back horse there is not !!!  We love Syd.  She was second and third over fences but she was just too tired to pick up her canter in the under saddle so it took a little longer than it should have and cost her a ribbon.  We all just laugh at her. Denise rode great - and let me tell you - it took some riding to keep her cantering around the course.  Sly won a jumping class and the under saddle, but he didn't get a prize in the first class because when Ryann corrected a left drift he thought she wanted to circle so he turned right.  He didn't mean to be doing something wrong, he just was doing what he "thought" he was suppose to do.

I was proud of Ryann today.  She is very sympathetic to the horses.  She tries hard to figure out "why" they do what they do instead of just getting after them when something goes wrong.  She is turning into quite a good horsewoman.

Sam and Reese were Champion Special Junior Amateur.  Sam rode great.  I'm so proud of him.  And Neysa and Reese were Reserve Champion Junior Amateur.  Neysa did a good job because Reese was Reese.  He gets so nervous when he walks into the show ring - but at the same time he's very lazy.  He's a hard ride. And - as I keep reminding everyone - that's why we have him.  Let's face it, if he was "perfect" he would still be showing on the "A" circuit.  I was proud of Neysa and Sam.

Lucy showed Corduroy today - his first time showing with us - and it was great.  He is such a cool horse.  And that Lucy did a really good job with both him and Melody.  She was Reserve Champion in the Special Junior Amateur with Cord.  And Britt was second in a jumping class with Sly.  She said he felt much better to her after Ryann showed him in the Baby Green - so that was good.  Like I said a few days ago, Sly is a very green horse - which we really didn't realize because he's such a good boy.  So Brittany and Sly have been teaching each other how to do this.  Now that Ryann has more time she is going to make him more of a project, which will be good for Sly, Britt and Ryann.

Ryann and Annia got some really good pictures today.  We'll get them posted soon.  Look for them on Facebook at Ryann Winn Photography.

This morning before the show started, the kids, Ryann and I started our day today in the lounge with a short devotional and prayer. It sure does make for a better day when we start it off by giving God a few minutes of our time.

We love our horses, our kids, our barn, and our friends. And most of all we love our God for making it all possible.  We are grateful and thankful for all our blessings.

I'm off to Upperville for a few days, then Stonehouse Stables on Saturday.  I'm looking equally forward to both.

Love you all,

Nardeen

Thank you Mrs. Jordan for the following.  I love it.

Back in the 50's there was a well known radio Host/comedian/song writer in  Hollywood  named Stuart Hamblen who was noted for his drinking, Womanizing, partying, etc.

One of his bigger hits at the time was "I won't go hunting with you Jake,
 But I'll go chasing women."

One day, along came a young preacher holding a tent revival.  Hamblen had him on his radio show presumably to poke fun at him. In order to gather more material for his show, Hamblen showed up at one of the revival meetings.

Early in the service the preacher announced,  "There is one man in this audience who is a big fake."   There were probably others who thought the same thing, but Hamblen was convinced that he was the one the preacher was talking about (some would call that
conviction) but he was having none of that.

Still the words continued to haunt him until a couple of nights later he showed up drunk at the preacher's hotel door around
2AM demanding that the preacher pray for him!   But the Preacher refused, saying, "This is between you and God and
And I'm not going to get in the middle of it."   But he did invite Stuart in and they talked until  about 5 AM at which point Stuart dropped to his knees and with tears, cried out to God.

But that is not the end of the story.   Stuart quit drinking, quit chasing women, quit everything that was 'fun.' Soon he began to lose favor with the  Hollywood  crowd. He was ultimately fired by the radio station when he refused to accept a beer company as a sponsor. Hard times were upon him.  He tried writing a couple of "Christian" songs but the only one that had
Much success was "This Old House", written for his friend Rosemary Clooney.

As he continued to struggle, a long time friend  named John took him aside and told him, "All your troubles started when you 'got religion,'  was it worth it all?"  Stuart answered simply, "Yes."

Then his friend asked, "You liked your booze so much, Don't you ever miss it?"  His answer was, "No." John then said, "I don't understand how you could give it up so easily.."

And Stuart's response was, "It's no big secret. All things are possible with God."  To this John said, "That's a catchy phrase. You should write a song about it."  And as they say, "The rest is history."

The song Carl Stuart Hamblen wrote was "It Is No Secret."

"It is no secret what God can do.
What He's done for others, He'll do for you.

With arms wide open, He'll welcome you.
It is no secret, what God can do...."

By the way... The friend was John Wayne.  And the young preacher who refused to pray for Stuart Hamblen?
....That was Billy Graham.

Nicole Miller Update

Nicole is doing better. She went to a show at Rose Mount last weekend, AND she was able to go to her high school graduation.  Praise God !  Her diploma was given first so she could leave if she needed to.  I haven't heard yet if she was able to stay the whole time or not. Hopefully so.  They have changed the Chemo schedule so it is not so hard on her.  She has three sessions next week.  She has a blockage in her intestines but the doctors think they can clear that up with medication.  After next week's round of Chemo they are going to re-evaluate.

Keep those prayers coming.  Let the doctors see a miracle !!!

CHARLIE UPDATE

It saddens me to tell you that Charlie isn't doing well.  He probably only has a few days to live.  He had another set back, which led to the decision - by Charlie - to discontinue life support.  So the process with the morphine drip has been started and it will only be a few days - and possibly even less.  My mother, my sister and my father-in-law all died that way.  I was with them all. It was peaceful and painless.  They just went to sleep.

Charlie has had a tough battle - and he certainly fought a good fight.  We will all miss our friend.  I am grateful for having known him. Good bye and God bless you Charlie.

When I woke this morning it was with sadness in my heart and I knew Charlie must have passed away.  So I opened my computer and here is the Facebook message and e-mail from Kim.

It is with an extremely sad heart that I send this note to let you know that our friend Charlie Weaver passed away this evening. Throughout the past 4 months each of you helped to lift his spirits and we are forever grateful for the pleasure you gave to him. Know that your love was deeply felt by Charlie, Brian and Jenny. Truly, you are all Charlie's Angels.

Charlie was a very special person.  He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.  My heart goes out to Brian and Jenny, who haven't left his side for the past four months.  Their love and dedication never wained. They are the friends we all wish we had - or better yet - the friends we all should be.

Upperville is wonderful.  It is such a beautiful horse show.  And - the weather the past two days has been incredible.  They have put new footing in the rings - which has changed the look a little bit - but it will be worth it in the end. Right now - as with any new footing - there is some grumbling, but they will work out the kinks and all will be well.  I'm sure in the end it will have been a good decision.  Footing is a big thing nowadays - it's not like it use to be when we went to shows and jumped around on anything.  And the funny part is that back then most of the horses were thoroughbreds and now everyone has these "sturdy" warmbloods.  Another thing is that most everyone just came from Devon - and that footing was PERFECT.  I've never seen footing as AMAZING as that.  I don't know who put it in but they did a fabulous job.  One reason is that they already had an established "base" with the gravel dust, and the ring was level.  Upperville was a different story having to start with the grass and deal with the trees, and the slope.  In order to leave the trees in tact they left big areas of grass around them.  So the horses sometimes go from the new footing to the grass to the jump.  That is a little challenging.  But - it is Upperville - and like the train at Keswick, you know what you've got before you come.  And to me - it is worth it.   Beautiful, just beautiful.

Casallo was fabulous yesterday.  He is the talk of the horse show.  He is just getting better and better and better at every show.  He won a class and got good ribbons in the others.  And he is the sweetest horse.  I just love him - can you tell.  One day he will be at Amazing Grace Stable.

On a sad note - Tommy Serio took a bad fall yesterday and it appeared he may have a broken ankle.  Poor Tommy.  Keep him in your prayers.

Ryann and Annia are coming to Upperville today.  We'll stay until Thursday evening.  Then Saturday we are heading to Stonehouse Stables and I'm so excited !

I have a "praise report."  Dr. King checked Alice yesterday and he said her eye looks much better.  He is pleased.  So keep those prayers coming.  He left me a message on my cell phone and he said "that foal is ridiculous."  He said "she is the sweetest thing I've ever seen."  Ryann and Brittany are to thank for that.  They are in the stall loving on her every chance they get.  That B.G. is the absolute best mommy and Ry and Britt talked me into breeding her again. So the deed is getting done again this Friday. As I told them, the worse case scenario is that Alice becomes a broodmare.  She's certainly beautiful enough.

Today is a little rainy - but it wouldn't be Upperville if we didn't get some rain.  I don't think it's going to be a washout, just a little drizzle.  I'm going to stay at the hotel for the morning and work on Deep Run and Ryann and Annia will meet me here then we'll head to the show.  Tomorrow is going to be beautiful again.

It is such a beautiful drive to Upperville.  The trees are gorgeous, the farms are incredible.  I was listening to a wonderful Chris Tomlin C.D. and I was thanking God for my blessings.  When I got to the show I was talking to Betty Oare and she brought up to me how beautiful the drive is and how blessed we all are.  She and I both wish that we could have some sort of worship on Sunday mornings at the horse shows.  Just a few minutes of a devotional and a prayer would be great.  At the Quarter Horse Shows they have "Cowboy Church."  Heck, maybe Betty, Ryann and I can start something.  That would be wonderful.

Here's a beautiful poem I read this morning.

The Park Bench
Poet: Unkown

Beneath the long, straggly branches of an old willow tree.
Disillusioned by life with good reason to frown,
For the world was intent on dragging me down.
And if that weren't enough to ruin my day,
A young boy out of breath approached me, all tired from play.
He stood right before me with his head tilted down
And said with great excitement, "Look what I found!"

In his hand was a flower, and what a pitiful sight,
With its petals all worn - not enough rain, or too little light.
Wanting him to take his dead flower and go off to play,
I faked a smile and then shifted away.
But instead of retreating he sat next to my side
And placed the flower to his nose and declared with overacted surprise,
"It sure smells pretty and it's beautiful too.
That's why I picked it; here, it's for you."

The weed before me was dying or dead.
Not vibrant of colors: orange, yellow or red.
But I knew I must take it, or he might never leave.
So I reached for the flower, and replied, "Just what I need."
But instead of him placing the flower in my hand,
He held it mid-air without reason or plan.
It was then that I noticed for the first time
That weed-toting boy could not see he was blind.

I heard my voice quiver; tears shone in the sun
As I thanked him for picking the very best one.
"You're welcome," he smiled, and then ran off to play,
Unaware of the impact he'd had on my day.
I sat there and wondered how he managed to see
A self-pitying woman beneath an old willow tree.
How did he know of my self-indulged plight?
Perhaps from his heart, he'd been blessed with true sight.

Through the eyes of a blind child, at last I could see
The problem was not with the world; the problem was me.
And for all of those times I myself had been blind,
I vowed to see the beauty in life, and appreciate every second that's mine.
And then I held that wilted flower up to my nose
And breathed in the fragrance of a beautiful rose
And smiled as I watched that young boy, another weed in hand,
About to change the life of an unsuspecting old man.

This is so cool.  I'm at the hotel waiting for Ryann and Annia and watching the live feed of Upperville.  Love it !!!

God bless,

Nardeen

What fun I had at Upperville today.  Casallo won a Green Conformation jumping class, the under saddle and reserve champion.  The under saddle was interesting because they moved him up from third to first. I thought that was a bit odd. He was only fifth in the model and they moved him up TWO places.  I don't think I've ever seen that happen.  Yes - a two horse move happens, but usually when they are moving the winner of the model.  Oh well - that's horse showing.  I'm sure they had their reasons.  I LOVE THAT HORSE - and it has been so much fun for me to watch his progress these past several weeks.   I haven't been this excited about going to horse shows since our precious horse "Charade".  Me coming to the shows started at James River when Casallo was so good and won so much.  Bob told me that I was his good luck charm and if he was champion I had to come to Keswick.  So - off to Keswick I went, which then meant Devon, and now Upperville.  And that horse is so cute.  He knows I love him and he knows I always have treats in my bag for him.  As soon as I walk up he pokes his nose in my tote bag.  Adorable.  I have had a wonderful time being part of Bob's Team.  They are the nicest group of people.  They have welcomed me into their group and allowed me to enjoy Casallo as if he were my own. It's been fun. I've missed the excitement of being at the ring with a "great" horse. I appreciate them stirring that excitement in me again and I will forever be grateful.  So - now I have to come up with the funds to BUY Casallo so I can leave him with Bob and continue to be part of the REC Team !!!   Hmmm - any ideas???

Congratulations to Savannah Jenkins and Starstruck for winning the Paul & Eve Go As You Please WCHR Handy Hunter.  I totally forgot it was today.  I was sitting with Sharon Campbell watching the Amateur Adults and I didn't get back to Ring 1 to see it.  I really wish I had seen her ride that.  I was talking to Virginia Fout yesterday - Paul and Eve's daughter - and she was telling me she got the concept of the class in California.  What happens is the rider picks their own course from the jumps that are set in the ring.  And the handier it is the better.  I've actually seen that class done at Devon before. Well - Miss Savannah and Starstruck must have been pretty handy because they won $2,250.00 for first place.  TWO THOUSAND TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY DOLLARS !!!  You go Virginia Fout for sponsoring that class in honor and memory of your mom and dad.  And Congratulations again Savannah, Starstruck and Chris !

Congratulations also to Chris Chance, Forecast Sunny and Chiara Parlegreco for winning Champion Adult Amateur.  I was happy I got to see him go.  He's a cute horse, and as I've said before, Chris certainly deserves him.  She has had some tough luck with her horses that's for sure.  Chiara rides GREAT !!!  She is always the choice for an Adult Amateur "catch rider."  Plus - she is just about the sweetest girl you'd ever want to meet.  So congratulations Chiara for doing your usual great job.  Chiara showed Victoria's Secret for us at Middleburg Classic when Ryann was in Master's Commission and was her wonderful riding self and won the Adult Classic.

Chris Wynne has done a great job with Admiral.  I love that horse.  He won good ribbons in every class. He's another one who keeps getting better and better.  I actually sold Chris that horse when I was helping Rod Lopez.  And he was dead green when Chris bought him.  He wasn't a "Green" horse who had experience in Europe in the Jumpers.  He was barely broken.  Great job Chris.

I'm off to bed.  Tomorrow is our last day at Upperville then back to Carrollton, Virginia.  Then Stonehouse Stables on Saturday.  I can't wait!

God bless, and I love you guys.

June 10, 2010

I'm home from Upperville and I had a wonderful time.  It doesn't get any better than sitting in those beautiful grandstands  watching the most beautiful horse show in America.  I was there for four days and loved every minute of it.  I was able to socialize, relax and be "happy."

My life has changed so drastically these past few years and I FINALLY feel good again.  I knew I would.  I always had hope and trust, but sometimes the "process" seems more than we can bear.  But the overwhelming peace and joy I have now has been worth all the heartache.  I thank my wonderful Lord Jesus for that.  He is AMAZING !!!

It was good to get home and see Brittany, Agita, Faith, Snuggles - and the birds.  Tango was squawking her head off and Tweedie was talking up a storm.  They were cute - and definitely gave me a cheerful welcome home greeting.  So cute.

I talked to Tommy Serio this afternoon.  He had surgery yesterday and will hopefully go home from the hospital tomorrow.  He says he is really sore.  He has a "couple" of broken ribs, and a broken leg.  He said it's hard using the crutches because of the broken ribs so he's having to use a walker.  He sounded upbeat though - and in typical Tommy style he said "you gotta take the bad with the good."  Garrett's doing a good job for Tommy and he's giving it his all.  It looks like Tommy will be out for a "little" while, but I doubt he'll stay down long.  Knowing Tommy he'll be back on those horses in no time.  So keep him in your prayers for a speedy recovery.  I think I'll take him a pan of Lasagna !

Bob gave me the box of candy and a blue ribbon that Casallo won. So cute!  It looks like our boy may soon be sold.  I am sure going to miss him.  We'll just have to get another one - but it will be hard to replace the special place he has in my heart.

I'm gonna hit the hay.

Lots of love,

Nardeen

I'm getting ready to leave for the barn and I turned on the computer to see if I could catch Jane Gaston and Lumiere show in the Amateur Owners on the live feed from Upperville.  As soon as I turned it on Lumiere was walking in the ring.  I love that horse - he is one of my favorites.  Jane is an incredible rider.   So - Jane comes in the ring, trots across the diagonal to pick up her canter and swats at a tree limb as she's going under it.  She is hilarious.  Jane and I were talking yesterday and she was cursing the trees.  She says they are in the way and she hates how you have to duck under them as you're going around.  And you know what, she is right.  So maybe Jane will get them to limb the trees up a little.  Anyway - Jane rode PERFECT - as Jane always does - and scored 90 in both classes this morning.  Her Handy Hunter trip was incredible, with her approach to the trot jump like only Jane would ever dare to do.  She is amazing.  Victoria Colvin reminds me of a young Jane.  Actually - she is the "Jane Womble" of her generation. Now let's see if she has Jane's longevity!

Lumiere is another one of Bob Crandall's horses that I have loved from the minute he imported him.  I saw him when he was just starting to jump and I LOVED HIM !!!   I tried to get Peg to fly to Palm Beach to try him but couldn't get her to.  I wish I had gone ahead and bought him myself.  Oh well - he has been a great horse for Jane and it just wasn't meant to be.

For those of you who aren't as old as me - and that's probably most of you - when Jane was a junior she rode all the ponies, all the horses, and not just the junior hunters, she also showed in the Regular Working, Regular Conformation, etc., etc.  And she was INCREDIBLE.  She never - and I mean never - missed.  George Morris wrote a great article about Jane a few years ago and said she was the best junior rider of all times.  I believe - and it appears that Victoria Colvin may be following in her footsteps.  Victoria rides all of Scott Stewart's horses and ponies, which in itself is a testament to her riding.  He is quoted as saying he "hasn't put her on a horse or pony yet that she can't ride."  He says she makes the hot ones quiet and the lazy ones go.  And the best part is - she is twelve - yes twelve years old.  And better yet, she's just a regular kid, who loves horses, her mom works for the barn and her father is a blacksmith.  Isn't God good !!!  What amazing talent those two girls have.  God keep blessing them !

Tommy got out of the hospital yesterday afternoon.  When I talked to him yesterday at around noon he was eating fruit and hoping to get out today.  So - he must have been a big enough pain in the neck that they kicked him out early.  Anyway, he is back at the horse show this morning.  You can't keep a tough, Italian man down for long !!!  He says his ribs hurt more than his leg.  Poor Tommy.

Okay - I'm off to the barn.  It's hard turning this live feed off.  It makes me feel like I'm still at the show.  But I'm also looking forward to seeing the kids and the horses at the barn.

Oh - and Lumiere and Jane won both classes this morning and I'm sure will be Champion, and probably Grand Champion.

Have a blessed and glorious day!

We had the best time yesterday at Stonehouse Stables. I love Tara and her family and it was so nice showing with them again. Sheri was even there with some of her students.  And the Isners.  It was such a relaxing, nice day.  I parked the trailer in "our" old parking place, put our chairs under "our" old tree, and stood at "our" same place by the in gate.  It was like going back in time - in a much more relaxed and peaceful way. God is so good.

I love our "kids" and our horses.  And when I say our "kids" I'm including Neysa, Kendall AND Ryann in that group.  And Jenny Old was the judge.  So - I had "my kids" at the show yesterday and it was a blast.  They are all so supportive of each other, such good sports, and LOVE the horses. The good part is they are learning that it is not just about the ribbons.  Yes, ribbons are nice - we all love it when our hard work is rewarded with a ribbon.  After all that is one of the reasons we show.  But - we can't lose site about why we do this.  It is not because we love ribbons, it is because we love horses.  I NEVER want to see our kids get to the point that the ribbons are what is the important thing, because it is not.  The ribbon is just the icing on the cake.  I want them to ALWAYS love the horses.  I want them be good enough horseman that they try to figure out their horses and what makes them tick.  I want them to learn to think like a horse.  That's when you become a good horseman - not just a good rider.  And that's what I want them to be. I want Amazing Grace Stable to be a School of Horsemanship - where EVERYTHING is taught not just riding.  And so far that's what we've been accomplishing.

We have three teenagers at the barn - Sam (16), Lucy (15) and Brittany (15) who have been riding with us for less than a year.  Those three kids LOVE THE HORSES and THE BARN like no kids I've ever seen before.  And I've been doing this for a long time and seen a lot of kids.  They are at the barn as much as they can possibly be - and if they had their way they would be there 24/7.  And - they are not just riding.  These kids WORK HARD.  They help us do everything we do.  They bathe the horses, trim them up, pull manes, and are getting ready to learn how to body clip.  They clean stalls, they feed, they turn out and bring in, they blanket.  They mow grass, fix fence boards, help paint, clean bathrooms, help plan who should be turned out with who, help decide what feed a particular horse should be eating.  They are learning to be horsemen AND they are learning how to ride.  And the improvement in ALL THREE of them has been incredible.  And, it's because they take care of, understand, and love the horses they ride.  There is so much more to this than just riding, and I love that we have such wonderful kids who understand that.

Stonehouse has some really nice horses, ponies and riders.  Tara and Stephanie have a done a very nice job.  Their kids all ride well, and the horses look and go great.  I'm very happy for them.

Reese was a good boy - well, as good as Reese can be right now.  We all love him so much.  You can't help but love him.  He is absolutely beautiful and the sweetest horse.  But at times he's such a worrier.  I didn't know how he would react to the show because there is a lot of activity all around the ring.  At one end is the in gate with the usual activity that goes on there, so that was all right. But at the other end - right up against the ring - there are cars and lawn chairs, and picnics, and PEOPLE etc.  On one of the long sides of the ring - the barn is right up against it and a lot of times the horses can hear the activity of the horses in the stalls when they canter up that side of the ring.  So I wasn't sure how he was going to deal with all of that. But he was good and didn't seem to mind.  If I didn't know better I would have thought he had one eighth!  He was just a "little" nervous about the jumps.  Reese's way of being nervous is he speeds up.  Instead of just staying in his slow beautiful rhythm, as soon as he turns to the jump he wants to take over and drag you to it.  But Neysa did a GREAT job with him, and was Reserve Champion Schooling Hunter over 2'9".  Then Sam showed him in the Children's/Adult division and he was Reserve Champion, winning two classes and 6th in the other.  So - we were all very pleased with Reese yesterday, even though he still had his "Reese" moments.  We all know that is why we have him and we can live with his "Reese" moments because he's worth it.

Ryann LOVES Memo.  He is the cutest thing, and SLOW and lazy, just like she likes them. We have Memo for the same reason we have Reese.  And Memo is the exact opposite of Reese.  Instead of speeding up to the jump, he slows way down.  He actually backs off and she has to keep riding at him.  Once he gets going he seems to be alright, but the first jump can be a little slow.  He reminds me of our pony True Blue.  But we are letting him go slow and not stressing him out about it.  We want to make him a "happy horse" who LOVES his life. We're hoping that once he gets comfortable with us and trusts us that he will want to go more forward. He was a good boy and didn't stop at any of the jumps.  He won a class in the Special Hunter and unfortunately Ryann went off course in the first class.  He tied for Reserve Champion but Ryann gave it to the other rider rather than flipping or hacking off.  He is adorable and such a good jumper.  So Ryann's having a blast.  Sheri recognized him right away and remembered him from when Scott Stewart and Lissa had him.  I don't remember him with Scott but I wasn't around the shows much in 2006 and 2007.

Lucy and Melody ended up Reserve Champion Children's Adult Equitation.  She won a first and a third over fences and third on the flat.  I'll tell you what - it was an Amazing Grace Stable "Team" effort.  You've gotta do what ya gotta do and we all played a part in "getting Melody to the ring" yesterday.  I was teaching the kids about that expression.  When buying horses we usually ask what it takes to get it to the ring?  And what we mean by that is, how quiet or easy is the horse?  Does it require lungeing?  Does it just walk right out of the stall relaxed and ready to do it's job?  Does it require medication like "Perfect Prep" or "Quietude"?  Well yesterday Melody required it all.  And even though she's on Regumate, she was showing signs of being in season.  So I'm not sure what was going on in her mind yesterday.  She required more prep than usual, but as I described above when talking about Reese, some of the elements around the barn seemed to upset her.  And you know what - that's alright because that is how she will learn to deal with different situations.  I bet the next time she comes to Stonehouse she will be a different pony.  I call her "pony" because she is basically an overgrown pony.  She's only about 15 hands - at the biggest.  I love Mel, and I know she is going to get it.   By the end of this summer she will be a made up girl.  We'll look back at all of this and just laugh - and we'll all be glad it's behind us. Lucy rides great and is a natural talent.  She is really learning to ride and Melody - as frustrating as she has been at times - has helped to teach her.

Brittany showed Supernatural yesterday because Sly was not happy with the barn being so close to the ring.  He went well for Ryann but I was worried he might be more than Britt could deal with at this stage of her learning.  She's only ridden Toby (Supernatural) one other time.  So I think she did a great job.  I was really proud of her.  She missed one lead change in each class, which was unfortunate because other than that it was perfect.  And unfortunately she missed the right lead in the under saddle - which is Toby's hard lead to pick up.  She rode him beautifully and looked so nice going around.  Brittany is learning how to do lead changes, and has gotten pretty good with them on Sly, but Toby is a whole different ride from Sly.  And I didn't think it would be smart to get all into a lead change lesson at the horse show.  So with her first time showing him, and only her second time ever riding him, she did quite well. And - she looked BEAUTIFUL on him. He is such a cool horse and if the rider can stay soft and still on him he's perfect. I've told the kids that a horse like Toby will teach you how to ride.  He requires a very soft, quiet ride - and if you can do that you will go around beautifully.  But if you get busy in the saddle, start twisting and churning, start pulling on the reins - you can just forget it.  So I love having Toby to teach on because I consider him my "Assistant Trainer."  I can explain to the kids how to ride him - then they have to do what I've explained.  And if they don't do it - he lets them know it.  Britt did AMAZINGLY well for her experience, and having to switch horses at the last minute.  And - she looked absolutely beautiful on him.  I'm proud of "my" Brittany.  Can you tell?

Kendall and Deena - what can I say.  The queens of the Pleasure division.  And she showed in the Special Hunter and cantered the whole course and did her lead changes. She is the best thing. She walked right in the ring and jumped right around - never questioned one jump, nor did she care about any of the things that bothered the other horses.  She is TOO MUCH. Unfortunately there wasn't a Baby Green division so she had to show in the Special Hunter with the twenty other horses. But she was such a good girl and learned a lot.  And Kendall, they just don't come any happier or sweeter than that girl.  What a joy she is to my life.

God has been so good to Ryann and me.  He has surrounded us with all the right people.  He has blessed us beyond our wildest dreams.  He has shown us His abundant favor.  Ryann and I are wise enough to realize that none of this would be possible without our wonderful Lord Jesus, our wonderful God and the AMAZING Holy Spirit.

God bless you and have a wonderful day,

Nardeen

We had the most wonderful day yesterday.  We took "Jack" on a field trip to the Sarah Bonwell Hudgins Center.  They were having Summer Camp and Bill Stinebaugh, one of the councilors, wanted to offer them something new and different.  What better than being around a horse!  Bill's passion for this "ministry" is fueled by his own son being handicapped and a resident at SBH.  It is at this amazing facility where Bill's son, along with over two hundred other mentally challenged adults, are able to lead as close to "normal" lives as possible.

The Sarah Bonwell Hudgins Center is a place for the intellectually disabled to work, a place to live in a safe, caring environment, and a place to learn to live independently.

The Foundation provides that support on our 38-acre campus located at 1 Singleton Dr. (off Battle Road) in Hampton, Virginia near the intersection of I-64 and Big Bethel Road. Included are residences, a vocational/industrial center, a commercial kitchen/cafeteria, a gymnasium, and an inclusive state-of-the-art Child Development Center.

We provide a home to services that improve the lives of adults and children with disabilities.  The programs on our campus are provided by Eggleston Services and include a sheltered workshop, an adult day support program and an inclusive child development center.

Thank you Anne (Ferguson) for telling Bill to contact us.  Ryann, Anya, Sam, "Jack" and I had one of the most rewarding days ever.  Janine, Beth and Anna from Kentucky Farm brought two horses and I know they feel the same.  Our wonderful horses gave these people an experience they will never forget.

Thank you Bill for all you do.  You are as blessed to be in their lives as they are to be in yours. Thank you for asking us to take a part in it.

I'm getting ready to leave for the Deep Run Horse Show - one of my favorite weeks of the year.  I LOVE DEEP RUN.  I love all the people who help put it on.  It is an AMAZING committee who love the show and work hard to make it as exhibitor friendly as possible.  Plus - Deep Run has a special place in my heart because it brings back so many fond memories.

Years ago, ummmm, probably about thirty years ago - I had just started taking my kids to the "A" shows.  They had been showing locally for a year or two, but had never ventured off into the "big" world.  Back then I had Donna Corbett (Scribner ),  Robin Kelley (Stewart), Susie Hall (Johnson), Ellen Wildman (Fiscella), Jennifer Bishop (Parrish),  Jennifer Griffith (Carr), and a few others who showed occasionally.  Our group was like Amazing Grace Stable is today.  I think that is why I am soooooo happy now.  It reminds me of the "good ole' days", when showing was fun and not such "big business."  Heck - we just went to the shows on our school horses and a pony or two who were bought inexpensively.  But even though they weren't on the fanciest horses or ponies, they all had a good time and learned to ride.  And for me it was FUN to watch the kids learn to ride, to LOVE the horses, and love being at the barn.  That's how "my" kids are now - just like it use to be.  I've always said - we were very blessed for Hunter's Way to be such a successful business,  but for me the journey was the best part !!!  We all worked hard.  The kids did their own braiding, cleaned their own stalls, took care of their own horse.  They were learning to be horsemen.  Back then EVERYONE did their own work.  There wasn't such a thing as "grooms."  The riders were the grooms and the braiders.  Deep Run was always our SHOW OF THE YEAR !!!  The kids would save their money so they could go to Deep Run.  We looked forward to it for months, and spent weeks getting ready for it.  And we were NEVER disappointed. Deep Run was and still is a wonderful horse show, and I am so blessed to be a part of it.

This year Sam is getting to show at Deep Run.  A dream come true for Sam.  What happened was Neysa is going to take Reese and show him in the Local Junior Amateur and the Special.  We are all very excited for Neysa too - but Neysa has shown many times at the "A" shows so she is like an "old timer."  However - she has never shown Reese at an "A" show, and this is going to be his first time back on the "A" show scene in Virginia in many years. And we are all hoping he is going to be a good boy.  I asked Bob to train both Neysa and Sam - since after all Bob is who brought Reese to America.  Reese was always one of Bob's favorite horses.

Back to Sam.  I was in the office at the barn putting the Deep Run Horse Show in the computer when I realized that the Pre-Children's Adult division was on Friday afternoon. I thought that might be a good place for Sam to come up for the day and show, since Reese will have already been in the ring twice with Neysa.  Well - when I called Sam into the office to go over it with him he was very calm and mature talking to me about it.  I found it interesting that he wasn't more excited - but I think the cost of it was concerning him.  Anyway, in typical Sam style he was very appreciative, politely thanked me and went out into the barn to clean stalls.  I'm thinking, "hmmm - I thought he'd be more excited."   Well, he was only gone about five minutes when he came barging back in the door, ringing his hands, practically jumping out of his skin and was sooooooo excited.  I wish I could have had it on video.  Priceless.  And that's what this is all about for me now.  When a deserving kid like Sam, gets to do something that so many take for granted.  I sure hope Reese is a good boy for both Neysa and Sam.  But if he's not - as I say all the time - that's why we have him.  And, we all still love him - and he knows it.  He is one spoiled rotten horse.

We had a wonderful time on Saturday at Bridlewood.  Thank goodness there was a nice breeze because it sure was hot.  Our horses LOVE it there.  We always rent stalls, and the horses feel at home now.  The stalls have BIG open windows where the horses can hang their heads out and they LOVE doing that.  They stand at their windows and watch the show.  It's so cute.   And everyone is so nice.  We really LOVE our "little" circuit.

Brittany - was our star of the day.  It's funny how every week the kids seem to switch off who's the star !   They are all stars in my book because they are really learning SPORTSMANSHIP and HORSEMANSHIP. Brittany showed Supernatural again and was beautiful on him.  He is such a good boy and she is really gettin' the hang of him.  I gave the kids a pep talk this week about how they need to be smarter about picking up the correct leads in the under saddle because they have all lost so many championships because of that.  Well - Miss Brittany did a great job hacking Toby - who can be a "little" tricky when they reverse - and she won all three classes in the JUNIOR AMATEUR division.  We decided to do that instead of the Beginner division.  It is AMAZING how far Britt has come this year.  I am so proud of her.

Sam only showed Reese and had a bit of an off day - even though he won a class.  Sam likes to add on Reese because he feels more in control - which I totally understand.  Reese tends to get a "little" excited if they need to move up.

I switched Brittany from Sly to Toby (Supernatural) because Sly is a little too green for her - even though he's such a good boy.  I have Ryann concentrating on him and he's getting better and better.  Actually - he is doing so well that I almost took him and Ryann to Deep Run for the Baby Green division. But - I decided it's an awful lot of money to go for one division.  Ryann would have had to join USEF and USHJA, the horse would have had to be recorded with both.  It just didn't make sense.  So maybe next year we will take him to a few to make all those fees worth paying.  We'll get an earlier start and maybe do a few Raleighs, Rose Mount, Lexington, James River, etc., etc., etc., etc.   I'm EXHAUSTED just thinking about it!

Ryann and Sydney were Champion Baby Green.  Syd was her usual perfect self.  Walked right in the ring, jumped around one time, never looked right or left.  That horse is too much.  She probably jumped a total of 30 jumps the entire day. Denise didn't get to show because of work, and Syd coped with her not being there this time better than before - thank God.  We also left her in the stall last night, so she wasn't as "tired."  She was actually "frisky" in her first class.  She's so cute.

Melody was a VERY GOOD girl.  She missed a lead change in each class which cost her, but her jumps were all excellent.  Lucy rode great and was very pleased - which made my day!!!  Mel Mel is learning how to be a show horse.  I love that little horse and I know by the end of the summer she is going to totally know her job.

Well I'm off to Deep Run.  I am grateful to my wonderful God and Lord Jesus for the blessed life I have, and I thank the Holy Spirit for guiding and helping me each and every day.

Have a blessed day,

Nardeen

My favorite boys were so good today.  Casallo is an amazing horse.  He is such a good jumper and so scopey. Reese was adorable.  He was very happy to be back at the "A" shows. He's so sweet. He was brave about the jumps, almost too brave.  Neysa did a really good job. I wish she had one more class today and I think it would have been perfect.  Good job Neysa !

Ryann and Anya came up this morning.  It's always nice having Ryann (and Anya) with me at the shows.  I just love my angel !!!  This morning Pam Baker told me that Ryann is such a beautiful girl and how she shines!   Then today at the show Judy Old told me the same thing.  I couldn't agree more.  She's such a blessing to me.

It was sure hot today.  Everyone braved the heat and kept on going.  I was sure happy to have an office job today.  It was actually FREEZING in the show office.  So if you're at the horse show, you are welcome to come in the office to cool off.

I'm heading to bed.  It's been a long day.

God bless,

Nardeen

It has been an AMAZING week at the Deep Run Horse Show.

We had the nicest, happiest group of exhibitors - in spite of the record breaking temperatures of over 100 degrees. Usually footing and weather set the mood for a horse show. Deep Run was dealing with both this week. Brutal weather conditions and new footing. Well - even with both things being stacked against us, so many exhibitors made a point of telling us how much they enjoyed the show. We even had exhibitors donating money without being asked !!!  In all my years of doing horse shows, I've NEVER seen this many "grateful" exhibitors.

Betsy Tompkins - the show Chairman - deserves much credit for the peaceful atmosphere she helps create. She "shines" with happiness. It is such a blessing to work with her. Betsy and her wonderful committee work hard, worry much and love the Deep Run Horse Show with all their hearts. They truly care ! And they try to address every issue that comes up. It is not "big business" working with these ladies. It is a wonderful group who are striving to put on the best horse show possible. And - they did it !!!

Scott Nunnally and his crew are to be commended for the exceptional job they did with keeping the rings watered and dragged. New footing was recently put in - and unfortunately because of the brutal winter, they weren’t able to do it asx early as planned. Because of that there have been some issues that needed to be tended to. But they worked long, hard hours to remedy the situation. Many, many hours, lots of money, and much worry went into getting the footing ready for this show. And most exhibitors were pleased. No - they do not have the fancy felt footing that we are seeing at Devon, Wellington or Kentucky - but the footing was very acceptable. And the committee and crew were diligent about making it a number one priority. My hat goes off to all involved - particularly for dealing with the brutal weather.

I am so blessed to be involved with this horse show. To me, it is like being on a paid vacation. I stay at a wonderful hotel, my meals are either provided or paid for, and I’m with some of my favorite people in the world for a week. And with the horses - our wonderful horses - that we all love so much. Life just doesn’t get much better than this.

On Sunday I FINALLY got to meet Dr. Berry.  I've heard so much about him and what a wonderful surgeon he is.  Everyone loves him. He operated on and saved Donna's little horse "Chessie" when he coliced a couple of years ago. It seems we are very blessed to have him in this area.  He was the horse show vet on Sunday so I was able to spend a little time with him.  He is quite personable, and he seemed to really enjoy the show - especially the ponies !!!  I told him he should sponsor some deserving child who can't afford this outrageously expensive sport. Who knows, maybe he will. Anyway - you're right Donna - he's adorable.

By the way - Reese and Neysa won two thirds over fences and a second under saddle and Sam won a second over fences and a second under saddle. I was so proud of them. And, I was so happy with Reese. He was such a good boy. The only medication he was on was Robaxin for a sore back. No Perfect Prep, no Gastroguard, not one other thing. Not even a lunge. And, he was in a stall from Tuesday through Friday with no turn out. He was such a good boy. We decided to let him go without any medications and we all feel like he was actually better. None of us have the money it takes to "medicate" the way some people do to at the "A" shows. And Reese is a bit of a tough horse. He's VERY LAZY, but at the same time he’s "nervous and worried." Bob was telling me that when he owned him he had a little "bully" in him, and tried to see what he could get away with. Well he knows we are all push overs. We can’t help it. We feel so blessed to have him (thank you Shaw and Scott) and we spoil him rotten!!! Anyway, we may start being a "little" tougher on him and make his flat work more intense. Bob gave Ryann a wonderful lesson and by the end Reese could have won the under saddle anywhere. He use to win a lot of them with Bob - at all the major shows - even Indoors. So, we MAY need to work on that a bit more. We’ll see. We want to keep Reese happy.

Some of the kids from other barns are going to come to Amazing Grace Stable this summer and help us ride the horses. We have sooooooo many horses. And, Lissa gave us another horse this week. His name is Fred Astaire. Neysa took him home from Deep Run and Ryann and Brittany rode him on Saturday. They LOVE him.

Caroline (Moran) is sending us her precious horse Vinny for a few months.  Ryann scheduled an IHSA Show for CNU at our barn in November so Caroline is loaning us Vinny until WEF starts in Florida. So - we have a great group of horses for our CNU girls when they get back in August. But for now we’ve got to keep all these horses in work. So if you want to come out and ride let me know. Call me at 757-846-8176. You are even welcome to stay with us if you live out of our area. We’d love to have you !

We have a great summer planned with lots of riding, Bible studies, and "mission" work. We are going to visit the local nursing home on a weekly basis. And a field trip to some of the top Virginia barns is coming up. It is going to be an AMAZING summer.

God bless you in ALL you do.

We had a nice day today at the barn.  Thank God for the cooler weather. Denise (Luckey) spent the day with us.  I wish Denise could be at the barn everyday.  We all love and enjoy her so much. Unfortunately Sam wasn't there because he went with his mom to Washington D.C.  It was really weird without him.  Denise and I were talking about how much we missed him, and how funny it was not hearing Brittany calling to him all day long to come help her do something.  Brittany and Sam are hilarious.  They are like an old married couple.   On Tuesday Sam could only be at the barn for half of the day so instead of riding he cleaned ALL the stalls so the girls could ride. How nice was that !!!  We all love "OUR" Sam, and he was truly missed today at AGS.

Denise gave the kids a little "theory" class today about neck stretches, and leg pulls, etc., etc.   She is so diligent in doing all of that with Sydney before she rides her and that is probably why that horse is soooooooo good.  She's a happy horse.

Denise was at the barn today because Dr. King was checking Heidi for Cushing's Disease.  It makes sense that she may have that because she just will not gain any weight and she has a pretty thick coat of hair for as hot as it's been.  So hopefully they will be able to help her with meds.  She's such a sweet old mare.  I'll never forget poor Handy - one of our good ole' school horses.  He was retired and turned out in the front field and one day I noticed how long and "curly" his coat was.  It was sooooo weird.  Well - now I realize that he must have had Cushing's disease but back then no one really knew much about it.

Our kids are having a ball riding all the different horses.   Denise rode Toby and did so good.  He's quite a different ride than Sydney who has to be "kicked" the entire way around the course.  I was impressed with how Denise was able to adapt to the soft, subtle ride for riding Toby.  If you get busy on him or start pulling on the reins he'll let you know it.  He is such a good horse and so much fun for everyone.

Ryann started her day with Memo - the laziest horse in the world - and he was adorable.  He is such a good jumper!!!  She did a lot of flat work with him and by the end he looked like the hack winner. Then she rode Topper - the complete opposite ride.  Topper's a sensitive TB - and she rode him beautifully.  Sly was wonderful.  He is jumping straighter and straighter and his flat work was really good.  She also rode Rex and he was AMAZING.  His flat work is so much better and we thank Laura Mumford for helping him with that.  She's done a lot of good dressage work with him and he's so much better.  He jumped around the course pretty as could be, straight as an arrow, and did all his lead changes. He was a very, very good boy.  And last she rode Heidi's precious little horse "Worthy" who is the cutest, sweetest thing.  He's a pinto and he is beautiful.  That little horse is such a tryer. He jumped every jump in our ring and didn't question a thing.  He was a "little" swervy curvy but heck, why wouldn't he be.  He just started jumping and today he was jumping walls, and roll tops and bales of straw.  We love him and we love his name.  "Worthy" short for his registered name "Worth the Money Honey."  How cute is that.

So it was a busy, busy day at Amazing Grace Stable.  Lots of riding - and lots of nice people to spend the day with.  Life just doesn't get any better than this.

God bless and lots of love,

Nardeen
